Preventing Breast Cancer
Recent research has provided us with new tools such as proven medications that may reduce the incidence of breast cancer in certain high-risk women. Clinical studies examining other methods of breast cancer prevention are ongoing.

Through the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care, we offer a Breast Cancer Risk Reduction class for those who have not been diagnosed with breast cancer but may have a moderate to high risk for developing the disease.

The most current information about lifestyle factors such as diet or activity level will be discussed as well as the use of certain medications to reduce risk. If you are at increased risk of developing breast cancer, our staff will discuss options and make recommendations about measures for reducing risk.  Reservations by calling 815-227-2618 are required.

Women concerned about their risk of developing hereditary breast cancer syndrome are enouraged to access the Pedigree Assessment Tool (PAT) developed by Dr. Kent Hoskins, on of our OSF Saint Anthony oncologists.  The PAT can be found on the OSF Saint Anthony home page and the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care pages.

You are at increased risk of developing breast cancer if you:

  • are 50 years of age or older
  • began menstruating at age 12 or younger
  • had your first child after age 30
  • never had a child
  • have a personal or family history of ovarian cancer
  • experienced menopause after age 55
  • have previously or are undergoing long-term hormone replacement therapy
  • had a biopsy with atypical cells
  • have dense breast tissue

Clinical Studies
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center participates in clinical studies for breast cancer prevention and risk reduction and was one of the participants in the STAR Trial, a nationwide breast cancer prevention study comparing the use of two approved medications. We are currently involved in a clincial trial titled 5ADH which is searching to identify the biomarker for aytical ductal hyperplasia of the breast.

Participation in clinical studies is always voluntary.
